Spring Semester 2015 Events-

The Foot Clinic- 

Sponsored by:  

MIN partnered with the Shalom Free Clinic Thrift Shop to provide foot washing services as well as foot hygiene education and products to the homeless population. MIN members provided a much needed service to an in need population.

 

Nursing Skills at Play:

  • Active listening and therapeutic communication​

  • Education about best hygiene practices for individuals with minimal resources

  • Circulatory and skin assessments

Youth Rugby First Aid-

MIN members volunteered as first aiders at Chico Oaks Youth Rugby games. Unfortunately, as with many high contact sports including rugby, players may experience a variety of sports related injuries such as cuts, nose bleeds, or head injuries.

 

Nursing Skills at Play:

  • Risk assessments

  • Wound care 

  • Therapeutic communication

Boys and Girls Club-

MIN held two presentations on the nursing profession for the teens at the Boys and Girls Club. MIN volunteers educated teens on the benefits of choosing a career in registered nursing. 

 

Nursing Skills at Play:

  • Educating youth of nursing roles 

  • Educating youth on presence of gender stereotypes in the workplace

Healthy Lifestyles Event-

 

  MIN educated children at the Boys and Girls Club about healthy food choices and the importance of physical activity through fun and interactive games.

 

Nursing Skills at Play:

  • Educating youth on physical activity

  • Educating youth on My Plate and different food groups.

 

Blood Pressure Screenings-

 

MIN members performed blood pressure screenings and provided health education with the Shalom Free Clinic at the Farmer's Market.

 

 

Nursing Skills at Play:

  • Educating the community on blood pressure and overall heart health

Walk MS 5K First Aid-

MIN members volunteered as first aiders at the Walk MS 5k. MIN helped make the Walk MS 5k a fun and safe event. Most importantly, MIN supported a great cause!

  • Basic first aid 

  • Therapeutic communication

Introduction to Jr. Responders-

Teens at the Boys and Girls Club received free CPR certification with the help of MIN and The Rural SimCenter. SimCenter instructors, Becky Damazo RN, CPNP, CHSE-A, MSN and Sherry Fox, RN, CHSE, PhD donated their time to teach the CPR LifeSavers class.

 

Nursing Skills at Play:

  • Educating youth on identifying cardiac and repiratory emergencies

  • Educating youth on how to perform pediatric and adult CPR 

MIN members volunteered as car crash victims for the Boys and Girls Club group, 'Introduction to Jr. Responders'. The group did a great job providing basic first aid and activating the emergency response system. MIN offered additional support and instruction for the teens.

  • Educating youth on basics of first aid and safety measures

  • Educating youth on medical terminology in emergency settings

"Wings of Eagles" Resource Guide-

MIN was comissioned by "Wings of Eagles" The Joseph Alvarez Organization for Seriously Ill Children for the creation of a resource guide to benefit families in need. The resource guide includes information about hospitals, pediatricians, finicial assistance programs, recreation programs, and more.

  • Identifying resources in the community

  • Advocating for families in need

  • Engaging in interprofessional communication
